AQUA4DEV-BS News: Conference “It’s About People 2026”

Presentation at the Conference “It’s About People 2026”

Under the project “Potential of traditional and recirculation inland aquaculture for inclusive and intelligent fisheries development in the Baltic States (AQUA4DEV-BS)” participation took place in the conference “It’s About People 2026: Answering Current Challenges in Society, Health and Technology” – the 14th Annual Conference of Europe’s Sciences and Arts Leaders and Scholars, organized by Alma Mater Europaea on 13–18 March 2026 in Maribor, Slovenia, and online.

During the conference, the presentation entitled “AI, Environmental Limits and Justice: Assessing Digital Innovation beyond Planetary Boundaries” was delivered.

The presentation examined the tension between the rapid development of artificial intelligence and the need to respect environmental limits in order to ensure environmental protection and environmental justice. Particular attention was devoted to the environmental impact of AI systems, including their growing energy consumption and ecological footprint, as well as the ability of existing legal and governance frameworks to address these challenges. The presentation analyzed how constitutional environmental law, regulatory instruments, and governance approaches may contribute to assessing and mitigating AI-related environmental harms while integrating the concept of planetary boundaries into AI governance. The discussion was further informed by insights from the AQUA4DEV-BS project on inland aquaculture in the Baltic States, highlighting both the opportunities offered by AI-supported decision-making tools and the importance of staying within ecological constraints in the pursuit of sustainable development.
