Riga to Host EIFAAC 2026 International Symposium on Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture

The European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC) International Symposium and 34th Session will take place in Riga from 5 to 9 October 2026, bringing together researchers, policymakers, fisheries experts, and stakeholders from across Europe and beyond.

This year’s symposium theme, “Managing and Conserving Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Resources in a Changing World”, highlights the importance of sustainable governance approaches in the context of climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing pressures on aquatic ecosystems.

EIFAAC promotes the sustainable development, conservation, restoration, and responsible management of European inland fisheries and aquaculture in line with the principles of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other international fisheries governance instruments.

The symposium program will address a wide range of contemporary topics, including:

• management of aquatic genetic resources,
• fish welfare and restocking,
• climate change impacts on aquatic ecosystems,
• freshwater fish stock assessment,
• river-sea connectivity,
• stakeholder engagement and citizen science,
• innovations in freshwater aquaculture,
• and the role of recreational fisheries in biodiversity conservation.

Important dates for participants include:

• 1 March 2026 – Registration and abstract submission opens
• 15 May 2026 – Abstract submission deadline
• 31 August 2026 – Early bird registration deadline
• 10 September 2026 – Registration deadline for presenting authors
• 30 September 2026 – Registration closes

In the context of the AQUA4DEV-BS project, the symposium reflects growing international attention to sustainable inland aquaculture, adaptive fisheries governance, and evidence-based approaches to aquatic resource management in the Baltic region and beyond.
